American artist Lizzo has re-released her new song ‘GRRRLS’ after facing backlash for a derogatory lyric.
The song was released on Friday the 10th of June 2022.
A Twitter user by the name of Shelby tweeted that she hopes “Lizzo will do the right thing.”
She was referring to the removal of a ableist word from the lyrics.
“Hey Lizzo please remove the word “sp-z” from your new song because it’s a slur,” she says on Twitter.
She mentions that the word is “really offensive to the disabled community,” and signs off with “from a disappointed fan.
Lizzo GRRRLS lyric change
Lizzo has come out with a statement on Monday night to announce that a new version of the song is now available.
“It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song “GRRRLS”,” say Lizzo.
The ‘Juice’ singer goes on to say that she never wants to “promote derogatory language.”
According to the dictionary, the word means lose physical or emotional control.
Which is quite clear why it is offensive to the disabled community.
“I am proud to say there’s a new version of GRRRLS with a lyric change,” says Lizzo to her millions of fans.
At the time of publishing, the said new version of the song was not on any streaming sites nor was the lyric video.
“This is a result of me listening and taking action,” continues Lizzo.
“As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the changed I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”
What is Lizzo’s New Album?
In April Lizzo announced that her new album ‘Special’ will be dropping on July 15 2022.
The track list of the album is not yet announced, and it is unclear whether ‘’About Damn Time” will be the lead single or not.
In 2021 Lizzo teamed up with Cardi B for their smash hit ‘Rumors’.
The song peaked in the top 5 of the Billboard hot 100.
She is definitely not slowing down this year when it comes to the charts this year as well.
Her song ‘About Damn Time’ which has gone viral on Tiktok is also in the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.
This makes it her fifth top 10 single, four of which were solo tracks.
Millions of people have watched and streamed the music video which has been seen over 42 million times.
